A Happier Lower Back

Understanding support instead of strain.

Saturday 26 September 2026 | 9:30–11:30 am | Thomas Tallis School

Many of us experience lower back discomfort at some point in our lives. Whether it appears after a long day at work, standing for too long, gardening, lifting heavy, or simply getting out of bed, it's easy to believe the back itself is the problem.

In this workshop, we'll explore a different perspective.

Through the precision of Iyengar Yoga, you'll discover how the feet, legs, pelvis, abdomen and spine work together to create healthier, more efficient movement. Rather than focusing only on the lower back, we'll learn how the whole body can share the "load".

Who is this workshop for?

  • Beginners.
  • Regular yoga practitioners.
  • Anyone experiencing recurring lower back stiffness or tension.
  • People wishing to improve posture and movement.
  • Anyone wanting a deeper understanding of how the body supports the spine.

If you are experiencing acute pain or have recently sustained an injury, please seek appropriate medical advice before attending.

What we'll explore together

  • Why the lower back often works harder than it needs to.
  • The relationship between the feet, legs, pelvis and spine.
  • Standing poses that develop support and stability.
  • How to reduce unnecessary tension in the lumbar spine.
  • Understanding common movement patterns associated with lower back discomfort.
  • Safe approaches to forward extensions and gentle back extensions.
  • The intelligent use of yoga props.

Take aways

  • A suggested home practice.
  • Practical reminders for everyday movement.
  • A deeper understanding of how the body works as an integrated whole.

The Iyengar Yoga approach

"Asana has two facets, pose and repose. Pose is the artistic assumption of a position. Reposing in the pose means finding the perfection of a pose and maintaining it, reflecting in it with penetration of the intelligence and with dedication." — B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

This workshop is an opportunity to cultivate that quality of attentive practice — where effort is balanced with observation, and understanding develops from within the pose itself.
